Week 14 Blog 2: Feminism

Wow.  I mean, wow.  That was probably the most heated our discussions have ever been, and to be honest, I'm not sure it was really helpful to the overall discussion.  A couple people were asked to "push buttons", and I think that might have been a mistake.  The topic of female inequality is something that has been talked about many times before, and has many negative stigmas associated with it.  Feminism, to me, brings forth mental images of women on soapboxes, shouting about how the male has always oppressed them and how women should take independence from men.  If you've ever seen the Nicolas Cage version of "Wicker Man" you'll know what I'm talking about when I say that the schoolhouse from that film is exactly what I imagine Feminism.  A classroom full of only girls discussing the singular problem from America, and a pair of twins say in unison, "Phallic symbol, phallic symbol, phallic symbol."  This kind of attitude is more hatred than anything else, and doesn't lead to equality, but more of what I consider to be a rubber band effect.  With the rubber band effect, imagine holding a rubber band taut between two fingers.  If you slowly let the two fingers come together, you can slowly relieve pressure and the two sides become equal.  However, if you let one slide slip off your finger, you get a rapid and violent reaction where the band overshoots one side and shoots off the other side.  It's the same when dealing with any form of inequality.  If you have both sides working in unison to fix the problem, while it may take longer it will in fact succeed with no violence and no pain on either side.  However, if one side calls for radical reform there is a high chance that there will be pain, and even the chance that the side that was mistreated will then go on to mistreat their opponents.  This then leads to further violence, and the proccess repeats.

  1. i Lol hard at your reference to the Wicker Man. Feminists always seem crazy to me. And unattractive, usually super unattractive. And why is that? I think it's because the typical feminist is not the typical kind of woman. They've made the decision that men are like evil or something, and it would never be worth it to impress them, because they are evil and wrong and women should get all the jobs. I literally have zero respect for feminists, because as soon as a feminist may understand what it is she/(he? lol) is saying, they realize the inherent differences between men and women, totally debunking the entire movement of feminism. How is that we can push for equality between men and women when THEY ARE NOT EQUAL. they act differently, socially, emotionally, logically, in parenthoood, childhood, high school, whatever it may be. These differeneces are due to the grand evolution of humans as a whole. And, now, the feminist movement seeks to ignore that, saying that women can DO THE EXACT SAME THING THAT A MAN CAN DO, which is inadvertently saying that WOMEN ARE THE EXACT SAME AS MEN, which is clearly not the case. I am all about equality, in the sense that a woman doing the same job as a man should be paid the same, if their work is the same. But how often is the work truly the same? and aren't there jobs that one gender or the other will be better at. But, seriously, when I see extremes, like suppression of women because of religious rule, I wanna puke, because it is disgusting. But when I hear a feminist saying that there should be the exact same number of female accountants as male accountants, I think, why should that be when a male happens to think more spatially and logically? Like psychology: on an objective level, women are OBVIOUSLY BETTER AT THAT, and there's a lot more women that take the undergraduate major than men. Their emotional attunement makes them prime candidates for the job. But, what I also think is just totally wacked out, is like women's UFC fighting, because all you have to do is look at the human race and figure out which sex is better for combat. And if that's a woman's passion, more power to her, because that is badass, but when a feminist tries to promote such a sport, I again want to puke, because no one wants to watch women fight MMA because it's just a little bit wierd.
And back to massive equality between men and women: do most women seriously want to do the exact same things that men do, that men do with more ease? NO! which is why the feminist movement, the modern feminist movement, is literally not even on the map of concerns for any significant political movement. It is so easy to dismiss and not care about. There are a million jobs though that could be suitable for either a man or a woman, but our society, sadly is structured build a hierarchy out of women and not men. There really is something wrong going on, but the feminist movement is not the answer, but just an almost inherently offending accident of women who have been personally offended by men. Of course, not all feminists like think men are evil, but when the entire movement tends to get the reputation that they have made an enemy out of the other 50% of the population, no one wants to listen to them, even those that are being ‘fought for’, like women themselves, because most human beings, women and men, understand that women and men are different, and thus are capable of understanding society and why it works the way it does, and then taking it by the balls after such realizations. Like, I’m not going to be a makeup artist, because I simply won’t get that far. So, to the woman who decides to be a construction worker for the purpose of breaking the social norms and supporting woman across all lands: you are an idiot.

  2. I agree with you about the rubber band effect. However, do you think that's ideal? There is no peace without conflict and there's no conflict without peace. We need to have conflict in order to have a solution to it but even then, solutions can be flawed. We aim for progress. We are human and we are not perfect. Feminists are the way they are because men had oppressed and discriminate against women for centuries (Tell me if this is not true). One of the guy in class even said that women had everything given to them. That the men had to work in order to provide whereas the women didn't have to do anything. What if the women wanted to do something with their lives? Were we born to do nothing?

Feminists are the way they are because they have to be strong in order to oppose men that think they should do this and that. Suppose feminists were passive. Do you think they'll get anywhere? This used to be a man's world and because of feminists in the past fighting for the rights of women everywhere, I and all the women in the US, have this opportunity to actually sit in class with everyone. I am not a person who would stay home and cook because that's not me. That's not what I like to do and I would like to have the same freedom as every single individual in the United States: The freedom to pursue my own happiness.
